Make Money Online by John Chow

‘Make Money Online’ is a ‘real’ (ie. not ebook) book by Internet marketer, John Chow. John is probably most well known for his blog which generates tens of thousands of dollars a month and his book is designed to help individuals to make money from blogging.
So is it any good?
The first thing I should say is that I am certainly no beginner when it comes to Internet marketing having been working online since 1998 so I am possibly not in the intended target market for this book but I do like to keep up to date with what other Internet marketers are writing about and actually, I am pretty new to blogging. I work on the basis that if I can find one or two gems of information in a product such as this then it will be a worthwhile investment of both my time and money.
If you are a complete beginner to blogging then John’s book is a great place to start. It sets out the basics very clearly and will give any newbie a pretty much step by step action plan to work from. I did find that many of the points had already been covered in John’s free ebook which is available by subscribing to his newsletter but it is always nice to have a ‘proper’ book. So for a beginner to blogging, yes this is an easy read with lots of useful information.
But what if you have a bit of Internet marketing experience?
I suppose the real question here is ‘Did I find the gems I was looking for?’ and the answer is yes. There were a couple of points which I thought ‘ah, that’s a good idea’ and in particular the chapter about Google Adsense was a bit of an eye-opener for me! I am slightly ashamed to admit that despite having been earning money on a daily basis with Adsense since July 2003, I had never heard of Section Targeting until I read about it in John’s book! I know, call myself an Internet marketer, the cheek of it! If you don’t know what section targeting is either, then you should buy Make Money Online or wait for me to blog about the subject at some point in the near future.
John also pointed out that one of the recent changes to Google’s terms of use in respect of Adsense stated that all websites displaying ads must have a privacy policy. I had completely overlooked this new rule (note to self – read terms before agreeing to them!) and found that although most of my sites already had a privacy policy, one quite old one didn’t and guess what? It’s sole source of income is from Adsense! Thanks for the heads up John
. There were some other little gems which I have taken away but the few paragraphs about section targeting and the privacy policy er, policy (!) alone made my purchase worthwhile.
Any downsides?
Not really, the book does what it claims – it gives a good, concise overview of blogging for profit. The only thing that spoilt my enjoyment of the book very slightly is that there were a number of typos in the text which is a shame as they can so easily be avoided. Tell you what John, when you publish the second edition, I will proofread it for you in exchange for a free copy – can’t say fairer than that
.
Make Money Online by John Chow is available from Amazon – currently priced from £6.55.
